  • Overview

    Under the direct supervision of the Chief Dental Officer and the general supervision of a licensed dentist, the Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) primarily provides dental hygiene services and general preventive dental care as permitted by licensure from the state of California. The RDH must be professional, objective, and have superior customer service standards.

     

    This is a part-time (typically 2-3 days per week during clinic hours, Monday through Friday).

    Work in geographically distributed, telehealth-connected teams where the dentist is in a dental office or clinic and allied dental personnel are in community locations.  The Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) leads onsite patient care in community settings like schools, preschools, rural communities, and residential facilities for seniors. The ideal candidate has excellent customer service skills working with diverse populations.  Previous dental office work experience is a plus.

    Responsibilities

    Responsibilities

    • Develop relationships with educational, social and general health systems such as Head Start preschools, schools, long term care facilities and the like.
    • Collaborate with site staff and a Dental Assistant/Dental Care Coordinator to obtain patient consent, make arrangements to provide services on-site and provide those services through a collaborative oral health system.
    • Participate in initial and on-going training with the University of the Pacific to learn how to use the software, equipment, and the project collaboration system.
    • Collect electronic dental records including digital radiographs, photographs and charting of dental findings.
    • Collaborate with a dentist who will determine a plan for dental care for each patient in the program.
    • Carry out those aspects of the plan that can be performed in the community setting including:
    • Health promotion and prevention education for patients, children, parents, teachers and caregivers.
    • Dental disease risk assessments
    • Preventive procedures such as application of fluoride varnish and other “medical model” prevention activities, dental prophylaxis, and periodontal scaling.
    • Placing Interim Therapeutic Restorations.
    • Tracking the individual’s need for and compliance with recommendations for additional and follow-up dental services.
    • Oversee the Dental Assistant/Community Dental Care Coordinator and others collaborating with site staff to refer and facilitate appointments in dental offices for those procedures that cannot be completed in the community setting and require the skills of a dentist
    • Maintain and Manage portable equipment and complying with OSHA and infection control standards.
    • Work with site staff and patients to schedule, identify and obtain consent for patients who may be candidates for the VDH project.
    • Attends and participates in staff meetings and other staff events.
    • Participates in quality improvement activities.
    • Provide leadership as a dental professional in a community setting
    • Provide prophylaxis, scaling, root planning, and curettage services to our patients. Provide fluoride treatments and apply pit and fissure sealants.
    • Assist clinical staff in optimizing patient flow. This will include restocking items, seating patients, ‘floating’, and supporting other dental team members with patient care. Perform all duties approved by the California Dental Board for a RDH with excellence and in accordance with the Dental Practice Act of California.
    • Collaborate with administration in addressing staff and member complaints.
    • Demonstrate understanding and apply working knowledge of safety policies and ensuring safe member practices.
    • Must maintain compliance with ergonomic safety standards; be mindful of posture and regularly practice ergonomic stretches.
    • Be able to see between 8-10 patients per day and have thorough documentation in the EDR.
    • Other duties as assigned by the Chief Dental Officer or assigned Dentist.

    Job Requirements:

     

    • Must have a current RDH license to practice in the state of California and have current dental radiology and CPR certificates.

    Job Preferences:

    • Experience using digital radiography and EDR system.
    • Three (3+) years’ experience working with vulnerable populations.
    • Work experience providing customer service, and/or interacting with the public in a service-based position.
    • Experience using Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
    • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
    • Ability to complete work assigned with limited supervision
    • Ability to work in a fast paced environment and maintain professional composure and demeanor
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously

    General Skills Required:

     

    • Work well under pressure, meet multiple and often competing deadlines.
    • At all times demonstrate cooperative behavior with supervisors, subordinates, colleagues, clients and the community.
    • Must have the ability to travel, without notice, to various clinic sites.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Position requires standing during the majority of working hours, bending and
    • occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds.
    • Occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens is anticipated. Personal protective equipment will be provided to reduce or eliminate exposure to routine or limited infectious agents. Hepatitis B Vaccine series completion is required.
    • Frequent use of hands and fingers to operate a keyboard, mouse and telephone.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include, vision to drive, vision to walk, close vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.
